John K. Buthorn
From Battlefield to Beat to Community Care
Lifelong Service to Staten Island
John Buthorn has worn many uniforms in service to Staten Island—United States Marine, 20-year NYPD Sergeant/Detective, and now Licensed Master Social Worker. His journey from the frontlines of combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom to the daily battles faced by New Yorkers struggling with crime and mental health reflects a rare, lifelong commitment to public service. With a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and a Master’s Degree in Social Work, John has built his life around solving real problems. He brings discipline, integrity, and a Certified Trauma Professional's insight to every role he undertakes.
After two decades with the NYPD, John retired as a Sergeant known for getting results. He served in high-pressure units like Internal Affairs and the Detective Squad, bringing criminals to justice and ensuring the safety of Staten Island neighborhoods. But he didn’t stop there. Rather than step away, John began a new mission—earning his Master of Social Work and becoming a Licensed Master Social Worker dedicated to therapy and trauma recovery. Whether it’s a struggling teen, a survivor of violence, or a veteran with PTSD, John meets people where they are and helps them find a path forward with the perspective only a Certified Trauma Professional can offer.
Today, John is running for NYC Council in District 51 as an Independent voice under the Patriot Workers line. He believes Staten Islanders deserve practical leadership that puts working families, public safety, and mental health first. With academic grounding in criminal justice, public administration, and social work, and real-world experience that spans the battlefield to the therapy room, John’s story isn’t a political pitch—it’s proof of what service looks like. If you believe our leaders should know what it means to serve, protect, and care, then John Buthorn is someone worth learning more about.
